Through It All, He Walks Beside You
As I sat at the prayer line, phone in hand, I could feel the weight of this man’s voice on the other end. Dan* was calling from the side of the road. The words he spoke were raw, desperate, and genuine. He wasn’t asking for money, not seeking worldly solutions—he was asking for divine intervention.
His voice cracked as he said, “Lord, help me, I am totally lost.”
I could sense the spiritual warfare he was enduring, the battle not just in his body or mind, but in his very soul. And as I listened, I couldn’t help but think of how many of us have been in similar positions—facing overwhelming challenges, feeling disconnected from hope, yet still calling out,
“Help me, Jesus.”
Dan’s situation was a reminder that in the most desperate and barren times of our lives, we need to cry out for the Lord. He willingly offers not just His presence but His very strength to hold us up when we cannot stand on our own.
“Help me, Jesus!” Those words echoed in my mind as I talked with Dan. I knew his heart cry was sincere. He was wrestling with the feeling of being utterly lost—both physically and spiritually. He had little money, was shivering in the cold of Idaho, and was stranded with no direction. To him, it seemed as though everything was against him. His struggle was deep. It wasn’t just a financial issue; it wasn’t just a matter of needing a roof over his head. He was wrestling with something far more significant—the question of whether God truly cared about his plight.
Isn’t it easy to feel this way when everything seems to be falling apart? We cry out to God, desperate for His help, yet the answers don’t seem to come quickly enough. There are times when we question our own faith, wondering if God is even listening. “Does He care?” we ask.
We don’t know how to pray. And yet, Scripture tells us that the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. Romans 8:26 reminds us, “For we do not know what we should pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” When words fail us, when our hearts are too heavy for us to articulate what we need, the Holy Spirit takes over and intercedes on our behalf.
Even when we feel lost, as a child of God, the Holy Spirit is at work within us, translating our despair into petitions for God’s will to be done.
A Spiritual Awakening
Dan was no stranger to Jesus. He grew up in the church and loved the Lord, but somewhere along the way, he had gotten lost. Life had happened. Time had passed. Choices were made that led him down a path he never intended to walk. And there he was, crying out, “Help me, Jesus!”
Isn’t this the cry of all of us at some point in our lives? We are born again into the light of Christ, but the journey can sometimes pull us into the shadows. I reminded Dan that Jesus is not just there for the halfway lost—He is there for the utterly lost.
“Dan, Hebrews 7:25 says, ‘He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.’ He is there for those who are so far gone that they cannot see the way back on their own.”
I could feel the peace start to settle over him as Dan sighed, “To the uttermost. He is talking about me!”
“Yes,” I assured him. “He is talking about you and about all of us. God doesn’t ask us to fix ourselves. He just asks us to yield our wills to Him. There is no depth of despair that is beyond God’s ability to reach us.”
The Comfort of God’s Word
I quoted the Lord’s promise from Isaiah 41:13, “I am the Lord your God, who upholds your right hand, who says to you, ‘Do not fear, I will help you.’”
With renewed energy in his voice, Dan replied, “I can feel the Lord lifting the weight from my soul.”
“Dan, I want you to repeat this instruction from Philippians 4:6-7: ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.’”
As he spoke those verses, I could hear the transformation in his voice. He began to find the peace that transcends understanding, the peace that comes only from God. His anxieties began to melt away as he experienced the very peace of Christ filling his heart and mind.
For Dan, the breakthrough didn’t come in the form of instant wealth, housing, or even a visible solution. The breakthrough came through the Word of God. It is in moments like these that the Word of God becomes our lifeline. The Scriptures are not just ancient words written on paper—they are living, breathing, powerful words that can transform our hearts, renew our minds, and carry us through even the darkest times. God’s Word becomes a shield, a lamp to our feet, lighting the way when we cannot see the next step.
Divine Provision
And then, as if to seal the moment with God’s perfect timing, a pickup truck slowed down beside him. A kind man offering help when he least expected it was sent to provide exactly what he needed—a ride south.
“Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus!” he whispered, full of gratitude and awe. It wasn’t just the ride he was thankful for—it was the undeniable sense of God’s presence and provision.
The Lesson for Us All
In Dan’s story, we find a powerful reminder that no matter how lost we may feel, God is always there. He is the Shepherd who leaves the 99 to find the one who is lost. He is the Teacher who guides us back to the path of righteousness. When we feel as though we cannot stand, He is there to uphold us with His righteous right hand.
If you find yourself in a similar place today, lost and struggling, remember that God sees you. He hears your cries. And when you are too weak to pray, the Holy Spirit will intercede for you. Turn to His Word, and let it be your anchor in the storm.
As you walk through the trials of life, remember to cry out, “Help me, Jesus!” He is ready to answer, to restore, and to walk beside you through it all.
